Last year’s State No. 3, Sumer Mago, demonstrated nerves of steel to edge out Nikhil Saigal in a nail-biting 5-4 thriller, booking his place in the semi-finals of the BSAM presents Malabar Hill Club State Ranking Tournament ‘24.
Locked at 2-2, Saigal delivered a stunning 47 break to overturn a 17-point deficit and regain the lead in what turned into a dramatic back-and-forth battle. Refusing to back down, Mago responded with a decisive 46 break in the 7th frame, taking a 4-3 advantage. Saigal clawed back in the 8th, setting up an intense final-frame decider.
The decider brought high drama as Mago found himself trapped in a nearly unbreakable snooker. Reflecting on the moment, Mago said:
“I was stuck in that snooker, and it felt like the game was slipping away. I played the best angle I could, and I still can’t believe I broke free.”
Despite freeing himself, Mago inadvertently left a red ball open for Saigal, who shockingly failed to capitalize. In a spectacular turn, Mago produced a clutch color-ball clearance, sealing a hard-fought 5-4 victory.
This marks Mago’s second consecutive appearance in the semis, and he’s hoping to surpass last year’s performance.
The action at the Malabar Hill Club continues to thrill, with more intense matches to come as we head toward the finale on 13th November 2024. Stay tuned for updates and keep the snooker spirit alive with #mhcshowdown!
