India No. 6 Shabaz Khan booked his place in the grand finale of the BSAM presents Malabar Hill Club State Championship 2024 after surviving a nail-biting 4-3 semi-final against 6-Red Snooker State No. 2 Sumer Mago.
Khan came out firing with a brilliant 83 in the opening frame, quickly surging to a two-frame lead. However, Sumer Mago, known for his resilience, fought back with determination to level the match at 2-2.
The fifth frame saw Khan regain his rhythm, taking a 3-2 lead and putting himself in the driver’s seat. Leading 53-18 in the sixth frame, it seemed Khan was cruising to victory. But Mago wasn’t ready to back down. Displaying incredible composure and tactical brilliance, Mago clawed his way back into the frame, forcing snookers on the red, green, and brown balls. With Khan conceding points on safety errors, Mago capitalized on a sold brown, potting it through to black and pushing the match into a decider.
The deciding frame was a rollercoaster. Khan initially took a slim lead of 32-31 with five balls remaining on the table, but the balance of the match seemed to swing in Mago’s favor. However, Khan’s experience and nerves of steel came through as he crafted a critical 24-point break to take the lead and ultimately sealed the match by forcing Mago out of contention on the green ball.
With this thrilling victory, Shabaz Khan now prepares for a high-stakes showdown against Giant Killer Rayaan Razmi in the grand finale, scheduled for 4 PM today.
As we kick off the Billiards State Championship alongside, all eyes are on the snooker finale. Will it be the seasoned Khan or the young sensation Razmi who claims the ultimate glory?
